2018 Year End Tasks
With the new year not far off maybe its time to do some administrative cleanup around the shack.
1. Update QRZ page as needed for new address, email, QSL information.
QSL info and other basic information can be changed easily. Log into QRZ page
and right click your call sign on the far right of the main QRZ page. Select edit and go at it.
2. Look at LOTW page and update TQSL software, if needed, to take care of new modes and fix bugs.
3. If you use the ARRL Outgoing QSL bureau check to see if your call-sign area bureau has sufficient postage/envelopes available.
I know the bureau has gotten more expensive, but I do use it as it is much cheaper than direct mail.
I will be sending a package out before January 1, 2019. I like QSL paper cards.
4. Which brings up the issue, QSL cards are on hand..... right? I just ordered a fresh batch.
5. ATNO LOTW and QSL confirmations.
If you need to up your DXCC band/mode/country count now is a good time to send off your electronic LOTW filing as well as your online DCCC QSL Application that uses paper QSLs.

EFHW matching kit for QRP operation, via QRPGuys
Here is a simple yet rugged EFHW matching kit for QRP operation, rated at 10 watts and under. I built one, takes less than an hour and works quite well for me.
I am using it for 30 meters, but it will work on other bands by changing wire length.

NoGaWaTT Kit Information
NoGaWaTT Kit Information
NoGa (North Georgia QRP Club) has finished another production run of the world famous NoGaWatt Meter Kit. The NoGaWaTT was featured in an issue of the NJQRP "Homebrewer".
This is a QRP watt meter and swr meter kit based on the "Stockton" design found in the 1996 ARRL Handbook pp 22.36.
The kit includes 2 analog meters (forward and reverse), pc board and parts and instructions to complete the kit including a dummy load. Users supply the enclosure and connectors. The power out meter can be used for either 6 watts or 2 watts maximum or with the addition of a switch and another set of trim pots can be switched between these 2 ranges. The meter labels are included and were calibrated with a scope.
No batteries or external power are required to use this kit. The kit is Altoids compliant. Several club members have packaged the NoGaWaTT with their NoGa PiG (Power Indicator/Guard) and never go out without them.

IOTA Challenge: Work all the XX-001 Islands
I enjoy island chasing and especially the RSGB's Islands on the Air (IOTA) program.
The QSL cards from the islands are often very nice. I use and like LOTW for electronic confirmations, but I almost always send off for a paper QSL too.
I wondered what it would take to work the first designated island in the IOTA designated geographic areas.
IOTA entities are organized into seven broad categories based on geography:
Africa: AF-xxx. AF-001, 3B6, Agalega Islands
Antarctica: AN-xxx. AN-001, Various prefixes, Graham Land West (Adelaid Island)
Asia: AS-xxx. AS-001, VU, Andaman Islands
Europe: EU-xxx. EU-001, SV5, Dodecanese
NA: NA-xxx. NA-001, C6 Great Bahamas Bank group
Oceania: OC-xxx, VK, Australia (Main Island Only)
South America: SA-xxx. SA-001, CE0, Easter Island
xxx= specific island designation
I think most would agree, at least for continental USA staions, that NA-001, OC-001 and SA-001 would be the easiest to work. I admit I have a West Coast bias on this.
EU-001 is harder to work but there seem to be stations to work although I do not have it confirmed for IOTA. I have worked it via remote station in CT but this can not, because of CT distance from my home QTH, can not be used in the IOTA program.
AF-001 and AS-001 are more challenging in that their are fewer stations to contact. My impression is that AF-001 3B6 Agalega Islands and AS-001 VU Andaman Islands are mostly served by expeditions and are relatively rare. Nevertheless I have had heard these such stations over the last couple years. I do not have either confirmed for IOTA though.
AN-001 is probably the most difficult to work because of the location and sparsity of stations. Not to mention the DX pileups such places create!
The specifics on AN-001 are:
AN-001 Various Prefixes ( 66º35–68º30S, 066º00–070º00W)
======================================
d.GRAHAM LAND WEST (ADELAIDE ISLAND) group (=Adelaide [Rothera Base VP8], Amiot Isls, Detaille, Horseshoe, Kirkwood Isls, Leonie Isls [include Anchorage, Lagoon, Leonie], Liard, Stonington
I've concluded that the working all seven of the XX-001 IOTA island groups would be quite a challenge but would take some time given that DX expeditions or research stations would provide the best--or only--opportunity for two to three of the necessary QSOs.

Vertical Antennas, Radial Length and Number of Radials by Rudy Severns, N6LF
Here is a very good article written by Rudy Severns, N6LF.
http://www.antennasbyn6lf.com/files/radiation_resistance_variation_with_radial_system_design.pdf
It answers many questions hams have about vertical antennas and how the number of and length of radials influence the radation resistance of vertical antennas made for the 40 M band.
Ground resistance soil conditions are also taken into account and discussed.
NEC models are used.

Alaskan Arrow Satellite Antenna
I didn't know Arrow made a 2M/70cm antenna with more gain. It's made for Hams living in higher latitudes, thus the Alaskan Arrow name.
It's larger and heavier so a Az/El system is needed. I wish there was a low cost Az/El rotor system available for these smaller, portable and light weight antennas.

Remote Operation on 40m and 80m is a Joy.
I have always lived in locations where antennas of height were not possible as I live in a small townhouse complex in California.
Most of my operation has been with a 100W old AEA ISO-Loop antenna. For a short time I had a Butternut HF6V vertical, and now I have a Buddipole dipole at 14 feet. I have never used more than 100W. In addition my QTH has a very high noise level. The 80 m band is unusable. The 40 m band will be OK for WAS but additional DXCC countries are hard.
I have over 250 DXCC countries from my modest home QTH, but I knew 80m DXCC was never going to happen and that the 40m DXCC (40 more countries needed) was only a hope or a task that would take longer than my expected life time!!
I thought I would try a remote operation that had a better antenna. For cost reasons I chose a 100W site with fixed wire antennas. I would have preferred one located in California near my home in Silicon Valley, but that wasn't as inexpensive as I needed. I did locate one in CT so I gave it a try (www.remotehamradio.com, OCF dipoles at 100 feet and a 100W rig).
Never having an antenna that was high up and in an RFI free location,I was amazed at how many signals I could hear, and work, on all bands compared to my home QTH or from a low noise local park location. I was truly amazed.
I am convinced that a good antenna is better than a lot of power.
I started looking for what for most hams with good antennas would consider "easy" DXCC countries on 40/80m but that had eluded me for over 40 years. Obviously this would help with the 50 additional QSLs needed for the ARRL Challenge Award. I was lucky to also get an ATNO, Western Sahara in the process. DXCC for 40m is insight and 80m DXCC is surely a reasonable goal with remote operation.
Results so far have been very satisfying:
